Camino
Sun is breaking through mist at dawn,
as I climb a hill towards some place I've never been;
the silver river is flowing far below me now
as I leave behind another town, another temporary home.
As the seasons change before my passing eyes
new leaves appear on the oldest vines -
they're dancing up to catch the light;
with you, my fellow traveller, I'm like a bird in flight
catching thermals to circle and glide deeper into the blue.
Could I set down my baggage
one step at a time and keep walking?
Could I learn to be free
from the fears that have decreased me
and keep growing?

I heard gentle speak, I've seen gentle laugh
I ask myself, can I meet the balance?
As the sea meets up with the shore,
Can I face all of my fears?
Can I hold myself back when I shouldn't rush?
Can I calm myself when I want to push?
There is a parting, there is an opening.
Let's slide our way through the gap.
Knowing it can happen helps our dreams meet reality.
Let's make the jump and not look back.
Will waters flow where the earth is now so dry?
Will love flow where so much anger's pushed it back?
Will the hungry soon get their daily meals?
Will the hunted make it before extinction drags them down?
There is a parting, there is an opening.
Let's slide our way through the gap.
Knowing it can happen puts it closer to reality.
Let's make the jump and not look back.

The flight of a bird

A sliver of moon

Red earth
A day comes and goes
Our westward trail
Is creeping into town
Scarred land
The sound of cars
And even as I am aware
So much is unknown

Sometimes days just pass
In searing heat
And songs that make no sense
Two days ago
We sang until we slept
Now we walk without a word

We walk on meandering roads
By vineyards and olive groves
Towards the sunset coast
The saints stand and we pass them by
Pilgrims, we follow the way
Until we fly home
Red earth

My memories burn like torchlight

Even as I swim through this darkness -
I'm a diver, diving for pearls.
It's the life I was born to, it's the only one I know,
Diving down for treasure -

With the waves around my ankles
And the sun upon my head
I am moved to go deeper;
With a kick of my legs
I swim down to the depths
And it is there I find my music.
As the currents move and rest my soul
I forget the troubles of my world -
I'm alive in these waters:

Is what paradise must surely be,

I do this work every day of my life,

I came out of the water fresh and baptised,
A new man with a new name and a new pair of eyes;
I gave myself to you like a bird to migration -
On the wing, my new skin shining sun gold corona,
I crossed over the ocean to a new land.
Over frozen Atlantic and still waves of ice
Our plane travels westward with night.
Land cut by rivers lies outstretched beneath
These sleek wings that slice through the sky.
With sleepy eyes half closed I fly
Carried between real life and dreams;
Is this the call I was listening for,
The god that reaches me?
We glide with the weight of the world
Far below us, lost beneath cloud.
Airborne, a home in-between,
Where we were and where we will be.
Circling to land, the earth takes my feet
And we head out to the street...

Then a sadness clouded over me one day,
And though your feet were flying, I couldn't help but say,

Ariel
We cut our ties and flew inside the arcs
And curves of white blue skies;
And slipping off our shadow selves,
Uncurling, newborn, rose and fell -
Light moving through the air,
Beyond the boundaries of bones and flesh,
Naked as an empty day and cool as raven night.
The storms we caused to be
On those swelling, dancing, clawing tides
Were set in motion by our deep
And formless words alive with heat.
Sanguine and silent now,
And moving on to who knows where,
Lying languid in each others arms
We glimpse of life beyond ourselves -
Spirit-like, Ariel,
Naked as an empty day and cool as raven night.
